German potato pancakes are a favorite side dish in the fall, especially during Oktoberfest. Now, we've made them even more fall-perfect by adding some apple to them. Our Apple Potato Pancakes are crispy-delicious with just a touch of sweetness!

What You'll Need

  • 3 baking potatoes, peeled and grated
  • 1 Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored, and grated
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

What to Do

  1. Place potatoes, apple, and onion in a strainer. Press down with the back of a large spoon to extract excess moisture. (If they're still watery, wrap them in a clean dish towel and squeeze to extract moisture.)
  2. In a large bowl, combine potatoes, apple, onion, and egg; mix well. Gradually add flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt; mix well.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Using about 1/3 cup of batter per pancake, form into pancake shape and place in oil.
  4. Fry in batches 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until golden and cooked through. Drain on paper towels; serve hot.

  • Serve these with some applesauce or sour cream for even more goodness!

Thank you for your answer regarding using fresh apples and for letting us know the fabulous short rib and cabbage dish the potato pancakes are served with, what a perfect combination for Autumn weather! Looks delicious and can't wait to try both recipes. My family and I have enjoyed many, many recipes from Mr. Food Test Kitchen over the years! Thank you for sharing them all with us!

You are very welcome. :) We're always glad to help!

I have a question, and also same question as myangelbiker as to what's on the plate in photo? My question can applesauce be used instead of fresh apples? If so, could you tell me what amount? Thank You!

Hello! We served this recipe with out "Slow Cooker Short Ribs and Cabbage". You can find that recipe by searching for it under that name in our website. And to answer your second question, no applesauce cannot be used instead of fresh apples in this recipe. The fresh apples work because they're solids, where as applesauce is mainly a liquid. Using applesauce would give these pancakes a "mushy" quality. So it would be best to stick to using fresh apples for this recipe. Hope this was helpful. :)

I would think you could eat these as a side with anything from eggs or sausages for breakfast to chicken or steak for dinner. Or just by themselves for a light meal or snack. Like the recipe said, you can serve them with applesauce or sour cream, or thick yogurt. Or whatever. Or, what the heck, go nuts and saute up some onions and mushrooms to top them with.

what do you have on the plate with this recipe of apple potato pancakes?
